In terms of practice, TML’s long term research strategy has been to draw insights from working with articulate, experienced performers and musicians in experimental responsive environments, and (1) build technology that can sustain plausibly rich live events; and (2) create new techniques for enriching the design of everyday spaces for ad hoc as well as composed events.

Temporal Textures (Sha, Smoak, Harrop) aims to study and create new hybrid physical and computational materials that can be used to modulate the temporal dynamics — the rhythms — and the sense of time in a built environment. The techniques can include adapting physics-based media synthesis to controlling lighting more malleably, or fabrics that sense pressure or produce sound when approached or stroked.
