How to drop stuff off into img's website

or, bye bye ftp, gopher, fetch, macip, www

There's a small amount of filespace which we can all write to from any SUNet computer (X, NeXT, Mac) if your machine can login via Kerberos. (If you don't know, ask your local sysad to help.) Here's the shared directory:

/afs/ir.stanford.edu/users/x/xinwei/WWW/pub/img

I'll assume that SUNet UNIX folk will know what to do, so the rest of this is oriented toward Mac folk. (If anyone can help with PC directions, please email xinwei@jessica.stanford.edu.)

How to join Leland space to your Mac.

Now, you'll have on your Mac desktop a portion of the same filespace that all Leland users see when they login from a UNIX machine. This means you have extended your Mac to the "boundless" network space which is tended by folks in Networking. You each have some "home" space -- a subfolder of /users -- named after you, into which you can drop stuff, or pick it up later. Now you no longer need intermediate programs like Fetch or NetScape to move files between your Mac and the Leland network.

Notice that all users are grouped into intermediate folders by the first letter of their names. For example, if your login name were studentessa, your home space would be

/afs/ir.stanford.edu/users/s/studentessa

To get to img space, open the /users/x/xinwei/WWW/pub/img folder. Anything you drop in there will also be visible via the WWWeb. (Try the URL

http://www-leland.stanford.edu/~xinwei/pub/img

to see this space.)

Your stuff does NOT have to be in HTML. Use HTML only if you wish to limit yourself to standard browsers like Mosaic or NetScape.
