M2 is a computer-augmented environment-a perceptual ecology constructed out of video, heat, sound and architecture.

The work constructs a spatio-temporal environment that provokes and excites an experience causing a momentary rupture in consciousness and perception. Its stakes for the viewer involve the human desire and drive for continuous experience while examining systems of gaze, data and control and the revelation and stability of matter under the actions of unstable media.

In the 1998 San Francisco realization of M2 which took place at The Lab, five spaces were architected inside a large gallery environment. These included a waiting room, an interior immersion space, a control chamber and a long corridor opening out onto a projection area. Visitors to the event were issued a color-coded ticket which determined the order in which they proceeded through the spaces.

Overall, the event is cyclical; however, the groups spend variable amounts of time going through the chambers. The immersion room is the only area of the environment where visitors are allotted a fixed time. Also, each group of spectators contains one or more performers, who are "embedded" within the group and haunt the peripheral attention of a particular group during the event.
